“Assumptions are the termites of relationships.” – Henry Winkler
If that isn’t truthful! I find it’s so easy to assume I know something about others. Many times I will build a static view of another person that is, in part, built on a number of assumptions. But you know what? People are constantly evolving and changing. So even if my assumption was correct yesterday there is a good chance it’s useless today. So why assume anything about another person. I know or I don’t know. Mostly the latter.
On a deeper level I am always seeking to know my assumptions concerning my self view. I found that I have a lot of assumptions based on what I did or used to do that no longer apply. Getting older means that just because I went up a mountain trail in four hours three years ago doesn’t automatically mean I can do it again this year. It’s important to assess and find out, not just assume. This is the second kind or relationship, the one we have we ourselves.
I think, for me, the most disastrous assumptions concern the future. Whenever I assume I know the exact future I am sure to be proven wrong. So far every time. With the number of random events that have impact on future outcome, it’s so much clearer to just stay with the fact I do not know the future, much less assuming any specific event will turn out the way I believe it will.
For those celebrating enjoy the holidays. In fact, find joy whenever you can. Leave yourself open to the possibilities in life.
Take care of you and all you love.
